A. Register your laptop
to use the DHCP services.
1) Go here
and click on ;
then click on Continue.
2) Accept the Ethical Standards and Terms of Agreement for
UNC Onyens and hit Continue.
3) Enter your UNC ONYEN. (If you do not have one, go here
to create one.)
4) Now add your info: Phone #, description, and MAC
address. Then choose wireless. see
example
5) Then hit Continue and finish up.
B. Configure your laptop to use the UNC
wireless network.
The University has begun using WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) in order
to increase the security of wireless connections on campus. Effective
March 26, 2003, all computers using wireless on campus have to be configured
for WEP. To find out how to do this, please visit: ITS
Security Wireless Page. This page requires your Onyen and password
to log in. If you wish to find out more information about this new policy,
feel free to call 962-HELP for more assistance.
Your laptop is now ready to connect to the UNC wireless network. Once
you've completed these steps you will have access to the wireless network
within 30 minutes.
C. Take your laptop to a Wireless Network
Zone
You will have to be in a wireless network zone, i.e. in range of a wireless
access point. Click here
for an up-to-date listing of available wireless network zones.
You can now use the wireless network as you would any other internet
connection.
Get MAC:
You can find the hardware address of your computer by going to Run on
the Start Menu, typing cmd, then
typing ipconfig /all (notice
the space) at the DOS prompt (i.e. in the new window that opened).
