TESTIMONIALS "The Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship has been an exciting and invaluable experience of my medical school career. It was very rewarding to design and complete a clinical study and have the privilege of working with outstanding mentors and medical students interested in careers in academic medicine. I was able to attend several national meetings throughout the year and present my research findings as well as meet students from the other Doris Duke programs. The GCRC staff at UNC were exceptional in providing support throughout the fellowship year. The program is very flexible and can be tailored to one's specific interests and goals. Outstanding resources are provided in terms of faculty guidance, clinic/lab facilities, statistical/computer support, and funds for research-related expenses beyond the monthly stipend. I highly recommend the DDCRF program to all medical students interested in spending an enjoyable year dedicated to patient-oriented research."
"My year as a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellow prepared me for a career in academic medicine in a way no other year in medical school did. I learned about being a clinical investigator from start to finish - applying for grants, designing a trial, gaining IRB approval, recruiting subjects, compiling and analyzing data, and ultimately presenting results at professional society meetings and in publication. The experience definitely gave me a leg up in residency applications and in preparation for my future career.
"It was a great year. I had no prior experience with clinical research but was able to get my own clinical research project up and going and obtained very interesting data. I gave an oral presentation of my research at an international meeting , and I was a finalist for the "best graduate student presentation award". I was also first author on a manuscript that resulted from my project, and co-authored a review with my mentor - both appeared in major journals. Most importantly, my experience in the fellowship changed my career trajectory and I am now pursuing a Ph.D. in a laboratory that is pursuing questions raised by my clinical project"
